| Synopsis
Equalisers, in their simplest domestic guise, are the familiar home stereo tone controls - simple circuits designed to balance sounds in the frequency domain. At home we try to obtain what we think is a realistic reproduction of the original sound recorded by the engineer. We fiddle with tone controls (i.e. "EQ the sound") because of inefficiencies in our equipment, poor room acoustics - or simply because our individual tastes in preferred frequency balance vary. In the recording environment, a different type of professional equaliser allows the engineer to "EQ the sound" by controlling the tonal balance of sounds as they are being recorded or mixed. Engineers use many types of signal processing to manipulate sounds (see our related module "Signal Processors) - but few are as basic to sound production as EQ. The engineer's experience, plus their knowledge of the nature of sound (see our related module "Sound for Sound Engineers") allows him or her to fine tune the frequency balance of complex sounds. This module examines the different equaliser types used by the sound production industry and provides an insight into their practical applications.
